Part of what we do here at SS Rods is that we bring back the true muscle cars & refurbish older vehicles to your specifications. Here is one of our current projects we have going on. A 1968 F-body Firebird 2 Door Hardtop Coupe. We can do this for you to get your dream car or fix up the dream car you already have. We have also located cars for our clientele and restored them for their new owners. This 1968 Firebird was in excellent shape when we brought her home. It has all matching numbers & the original paperwork from when the car was bought in 1968. The Firebird came from Nevada & was in a shelled out condition with the original 400 motor & 4 speed transmission on the side. All of the seats & parts were actually all accounted for. Only Surface rust and all pans were solid with no holes. So then we got started. We had her sanded down some when these pics were taken.
The motor is the original 400 big block with original Holley 750 dual feed carburetor. It turned over well so we decided to rebuild it. New rings, gaskets, rebuilt the 4 speed transmission and gave this big 400 an original paint job. Her are the before & after pics.
We started in on the body of this Firebird, was not sure about taking it back to the original red color with vinyl top or to go with something a little more eye catching. As you can see we went with something a little more eye catching – a mint green with a black lace strip. We sanded down the body, frame, inside and the underside. Then primed it all, painted and then added the strip, which you will see later after the new vinyl top is installed. We are touching up a couple of spots yet but this will be done shortly.
We then have installed the 400 big block, drive train, new brakes, brake lines and gas lines. We reinstalled the gas tank (also painted the mint green) after painting the bottom of the firebird, the wheel wells, engine compartment and the interior jet black as the original car had come. The engine compartment was the original red but we decided to set the engine off with the black back ground & keep the heat better contained. Looks like she’s ready to go to the races.
Next we will finish up the body, top & trim, then go onto the interior. I am sure excited about getting this on the road – just to see what she’ll do. See our updated progress as we go along. |
